Memphis, TN – The new 200-foot long pedestrian bridge to span Court Avenue will be delivered to the Memphis riverfront on Thursday, April 29, 2010 between 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. and installed by early afternoon.
The new elevated pedestrian bridge will cross Court Avenue where it intersects with Riverside Drive connecting the University of Memphis School of Law to Confederate Park. The installation is part of the Law School/Confederate Park Public Access Project led by the Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC).
“We’re excited to be able to provide this new pedestrian access to the Memphis riverfront,” says RDC president, Benny Lendermon. “We also had great partners in helping us do this. The Hyde Family Foundations, the City of Memphis and the University all played major parts.”
The bridge will be brought in four sections with each being delivered on a separate 18-wheeled, flatbed tractor trailer. Elevated 24 feet above street level, the all steel, box truss design will have custom hand railing and Ipe (pronounced e-pay) wood decking. The bridge will feature artistic lighting by Electroland, through a partnership with the UrbanArt Commission.
The project was designed by Ritchie Smith Associates and Zellner Construction Services is the contractor.
The RDC is a non-profit organization, charged with the development of a world-class riverfront which includes green space, public amenities, private development and economic opportunities designed jointly with citizens and funded through public/private partnerships. This project is the latest in a series of projects by the RDC designed to reconnect Memphians with the Mississippi River.
